Pediatric Lyme Disease Foundation

The Lyme Diseaseproblem was brought to Kiwanis' attention during 2000-01 when New York DistrictGov. John Gridley vowed
to do something to help children afflicted with thisterrible disease. The Lyme Disease Project was quickly set up to help pay for medical
treatment for children with this disease. Unfortunately most insurance companiesdo not pay for its treatment, which is very expensive.
Lyme Disease is causedby bacteria usually transmitted by the deer tick. It is a scary possibility toconsider for New York State residents who
enjoy spending time outside duringthe summer months. Lyme Disease may affect the brain in many ways. The most common is a
disturbance in thinking. Other symptoms that occur frequentlyinclude headache, mood swings, irritability, depression and marked fatigue.
The spirochete which causes Lyme Disease can invade the central nervous systemwithin days to a week of initial skin infection. the majority
of people who aretreated early with antibiotics do well and incur no long-term problems. Peoplewho are not treated until later may have
a more complicated outcome.

Local Causes

Local Causes are exactly that; fundraisingand service projects aimed at helping your local community. Collecting towelsand blankets
for a family whose house has burned down or raising money for acommunity member with cancer are only two examples of the many local
causes that you and your club can take part in.

Eliminate

With “The Eliminate Project”, KiwanisInternational and UNICEF have joined forces to eliminate maternal and neonataltetanus.
This deadly disease steals the lives of nearly 60,000 innocent babiesand a significant number of women each year. The effects of the
disease areexcruciating — tiny newborns suffer repeated, painful convulsions and extremesensitivity to light and touch. MNT is highly
preventable. Just three doses ofa 60-cent immunization protect mothers, who then pass on the immunity to theirfuture babies. Together,
Kiwanis and UNICEF can stop this disease. 129 millionmothers and their future babies must be immunized. This requires vaccines, syringes,
safe storage, transportation, thousands of skilled staff and more. Itwill take US$110 million — and the dedicated work of UNICEF and e
very member ofthe Kiwanis family.

Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Center

Unintentional injury killsmore children every year than any other cause- including homicide and suicide.Trauma claims the lives
of 25,000 children every year; with another 100,000youngsters permanently disabled. In 1991, North Shore University Hospital and the
New York District of Kiwanis International established the KiwanisPediatric Trauma Center. Kiwanis clubs in the New York District are
active sponsors of three Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Centers: North Shore UniversityHospital in Manhasset, Albany, and Buffalo. KPTC is a
complex program thatdraws on the vast resources of the hospital and Kiwanis to give seriouslyinjured children the best of care. KPTC
sponsors a variety of events during theyear designed to raise funds to support efforts to reduce pediatricinjuries and support pediatric
treatment.
