Each year, the New York district board endorses a set amount of charities and organizations that they believe are important and represent our values. All district projects make up the fundraising component of our district's set of projects for the service year. Please take some time to look through the district projects for this service year.

Alzheimer's Association
The Alzheimer's Association is the leading, global voluntary health organization in Alzheimer's care and support, and the largest private, nonprofit funder of Alzheimer's research. Currently there are more than 5 million people with Alzheimer’s disease in the United States and 35 million worldwide. These numbers are expected to skyrocket to as many as 16 million and 115 million people respectively by mid-century. The potential of earlier diagnosis and the development of better treatments may significantly change the experience of Alzheimer’s for millions of people. In the meantime, the cost of care will rise exponentially for society. These factors will provide unprecedented challenges and opportunities to the Association over the coming years. This district project can be viewed as the fundraising counterpart to this year's Governor's Project, "Keys to Accessibility".

Doctors Without Borders
One of our past district projects, Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an international medical humanitarian organization created by doctors and journalists in France in 1971.Today, MSF provides independent, impartial assistance in more than 60 countries to people whose survival is threatened by violence, neglect, or catastrophe, primarily due to armed conflictepidemicsmalnutritionexclusion from health care, or natural disasters. MSF provides independent, impartial assistance to those most in need. MSF also reserves the right to speak out to bring attention to neglected crises, challenge inadequacies or abuse of the aid system, and to advocate for improved medical treatments and protocols.

The Eliminate Project
With The Eliminate Project, Kiwanis International and UNICEF have joined forces to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus. This deadly disease steals the lives of nearly 60,000 innocent babies and a significant number of women each year. The effects of the disease are excruciating — tiny newborns suffer repeated, painful convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light, sound, and touch and die in approximately one week. MNT is highly preventable. A simple $1.80 can provide three doses of a 60-cent immunization to protect a mother and her future children. Together, Kiwanis and UNICEF can stop this disease and will immunize 129 millionmothers and their future babies. This requires vaccines, syringes, safe storage facilities, transportation, thousands of skilled staff, and much more. Together as a Kiwanis family and with UNICEF, we hope to raise a total of 110 million US dollars for The Eliminate Project by 2015, which will also be the 100th anniversary of Kiwanis International. Together we can eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus from the face of the earth.

Front Row Foundation
This year at our 64th Annual Leadership Training Conference, we had the pleasure of having Jon Vroman, co-founder of the Front Row Foundation, serve as our keynote speaker. We are glad to endorse his organization as one of our district projects this year. Front Row Foundation was born in a community of close-knit family and friends who wanted to make a difference for those braving critical health challenges. Front Row volunteers do what they do because of their deep belief in the healing powers of the mind and its immeasurable ability to nourish the human spirit. It is our belief that a group of people united in passion and common purpose can have the power to provide life changing moments for others in need, and transform the quality of their life. For those who are facing critical health issues, any positive experience, especially those that involve their favorite team or musician, can be a life-changing experience. Our dream is to provide a Front Row experience that will allow individuals to set aside any physical or emotional challenges while they celebrate the beauty and emotional energy of life. Great moments in our lives are remembered forever. Together we can, and will create lasting memories for those in need; one positive, incredible and life-changing experience at a time.

Kamp Kiwanis
Kamp Kiwanis is a program located in Taberg, New York, which provides children aged 8 to 14 (including those with special needs) with a unique camping experience. Kamp Kiwanis allows children to just be themselves, no matter what their situation, and encourages them to participate in team building exercises and activities, including boating, sports, and campfires. Kamp Kiwanis costs nothing for the children that attend. Through donations, the Kamp sponsors adults and children, allowing them to experience the program regardless of their financial position.

Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Center
The Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Center is designed to help treat and protect children. It is a Kiwanis-Hospital association that was created in order to provide the funds and staff necessary to create a trauma center with extensive medical assistance and safety. Kiwanis helps to provide treatment as to meet the needs of families with children suffering from trauma (e.g., transportation). Trauma takes the lives of 25,000 children each year and leaves another 120,000 children permanently disabled. An estimated 25% of these deaths and disabilities could be prevented with proper and prompt care. Kiwanis needs Key Club’s help to reduce the number of lives cut short!

Local Causes
Just like the name reads, Local Causes encompass any service or fundraising projects done for your local homes, schools and communities. Collecting towels and blankets for a family whose house has burned down or raising money for a community member with cancer are only two examples of the many local causes that you and your club can take part in. Local Causes serve to encourage members not only to serve, but to take the many opportunities available to establish long lasting relationships with local facilities and organizations, which will allow for the spread of Key Club's spirit of service in your local community. Together, let's make our communities a better place. For service or fundraising ideas, please check our Paperwork and Resources tab.

Pediatric Lyme Disease Foundation
Lyme Disease was brought to Kiwanis' attention during 2000-01 when New York District Kiwanis Governor John Gridley vowed to do something to help children afflicted with this terrible disease. The Lyme Disease Project was quickly set up to help pay for medical treatment for children with this disease. Unfortunately most insurance companies do not pay for its treatment, which is very expensive. Lyme Disease is caused by bacteria usually transmitted by the deer tick. It is a scary possibility to consider for New York State residents who enjoy spending time outside during the summer months. Lyme Disease may affect the brain in many ways. The most common is a disturbance in thinking. Other symptoms that occur frequently include headache, mood swings, irritability, depression and marked fatigue. The spirochete which causes Lyme Disease can invade the central nervous system within days to a week of initial skin infection. the majority of people who aretreated early with antibiotics do well and incur no long-term problems. Peoplewho are not treated until later may have a more complicated outcome.

St. Jude Children's Research Hospital
St. Jude Children's Research Hospital was one of past district projects. The mission of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is to advance cures, and means of prevention, for pediatric catastrophic diseases through research and treatment. Consistent with the vision of their founder Danny Thomas, no child is denied treatment based on race, religion or a family's ability to pay. Their vision is to be the world leader in advancing the treatment and prevention of catastrophic diseases in children. This vision will be pursued by providing outstanding patient care; by conducting basic, translational and clinical research designed to elucidate biological mechanisms, understand disease pathogenesis, improve diagnosis, enhance treatment outcome, prevent diseases and minimize adverse consequences of treatment; and by educating health care and scientific research professionals. Through these efforts they seek to cure and enhance the quality of life for an increasing proportion of children who come to them for treatment, and by expanding and sharing knowledge, to advance treatment of children with catastrophic diseases worldwide, while developing strategies to prevent catastrophic diseases in children.
